During our recent Facebook Fan Open Night we had Steve & Grant from the Plane Crazy Down Under Podcast with us to fly the simulator and interview people. They managed to record some great material and it’s been included in their latest episode along with an interview with Matt Hall, Australia’s Red Bull Air Racer.
Denis Walter of radio station 3AW came to our simulator and had a great time flying around Melbourne and Geelong with Check Captain Carlo, then went to Hong Kong to attempt the challenging landing at old Kai Tak.
Check out the video showing excerpts from the cockpit camera available on Denis’ section of the 3AW website.
The team from Radio 3AW will be broadcasting live from our simulator on December 10th . Throughout the day the station will be performing live cross overs to their staff who will be interviewing our instructors and customers. There will also be some give-aways and one of our competitions will be drawn live on air.
If you’re in Melbourne you can listen to 3AW on AM693, otherwise you can listen live from their website.
Retail education from the cockpit Outside the world of flying 737 simulators, Check Captain Carlo is also a successful entrepreneur with a background in retail and a company that specialises in supplying IT and web based systems, equipment & services to retailers ( RetailCare). He was recently to be found on the cockpit of our 737 simulator discussing retail challenges with David Barnes from Platform Interactive while also instructing him on the finer points of flying into Kai Tak and Las Vegas (did we mention Carlo can multi-task exceptionally well?)
David and Carlo are both members of Entrepreneur’s Organisation (EO), a dynamic network of business owners. David has written about his experience and some of the retail challenges that were discussed on his blog. No matter what industry sector you’re in, the skills associated with flying a 737 can certainly help to stretch your abilities and give you a boost to face the challenges in the world outside the cockpit.
Anne-Maree Biggar went flying with Jenna
Anne-Maree Biggar from Channel 10′s 9am with David & Kim show did a live 30 minute cross-over back to the studio this morning from our simulator. She and her crew came in, set up and covered the “What’s on this weekend in Melbourne” segment from the flight deck of our 737-800.
Anne-Maree flew around Las Vegas at night with her trusty instructor Jenna, presenting “What’s on this weekend” while circling at 3,000 feet over the city lights. She then went on to fly some circuits at McCarran International Airport (KLAS) to wind up her time in the cockpit, stating afterwards that she absolutely loved her experience.
Update: The video of Anne-Maree’s flight experience has been made available on the 9am with David & Kim site.
Watch Anne-Maree’s flight experience
Earlier this week a caller to radio 3AW was lamenting the loss of cockpit access in the post-911 world. Fortunately Check Captain Carlo wasn’t busy flying or arranging new deals and was actually listening in at the time. Showing the same skills he uses to survive a V1 cut on a wet runway, Carlo quickly called up and got through to Denis Walter, explaining how Flight Experience Melbourne could help let people experience the cockpit now that security has closed the doors.
We’re working to get audio from the station and will include it here if we get it.
Recently we had Steve & Grant from the Plane Crazy Down Under Podcast visit our simulator to record a session flying around Melbourne. They also recorded an interview with Check Captain Carlo on the flight deck which has just been released. The interview segment starts just before the 40 minute mark in episode #6.
You can find the Plane Crazy Down Under podcast on iTunes or on the Plane Crazy Down Under website. If you’re interested in aviation in the Asia/Pacific area, we highly recommend checking them out.
We were pleasantly amused to find our flight simulator mentioned in a recent opinion piece from The Age newspaper. We appear in a “guess who’s been seen at…” entry about one third of the way down the article, under the title “Chocks Away.”
While we’re thrilled to be considered a place to see or be seen, we would like to point out, however, that our simulator is a 737 aircraft, not a 747 as mentioned in the article. Getting a 747 into Queenstown airport would be too much of a challenge, even for our instructors.
We're in the top right corner Our simulator was used as a vehicle for demonstrating the physics of flight in The Age newspaper’s “Science Section” lift-out on Sunday, August 16th. Featuring comments from Check Captain Carlo, the article points out how flying the simulator can help put the physics of flight dynamics into practice without leaving the ground.
While the Science Section is typically targeted at the general public, it is also frequently read by a younger audience. The article provides an enjoyable way to apply what a reader might be learning at school to a real world flight environment.

To help keep you updated with the latest events at Flight Experience Melbourne, our team of instructors have been set up with a Twitter account. You can follow their tweets from the 737-800 simulator by following FlightExpQV where we post notes about any interesting flights our customers have taken, new blog posts and other news we want to quickly tell you about.
We’re planning to display the Twitter feed here on the blog and will also have some special “Twitter Only” deals on flight packages and merchandise, so be sure your Twitter account is following us at FlightExpQV.
